Notes From a Recent Planning Session
Last month I sat down with a small team of installers and interior designers to map out how OLED panels should actually be placed in a home, not just how they look in a showroom. The session ran longer than expected, mostly because we kept circling back to the same question: what does a display need to do in a room before it earns its wall space?
We started with the living room, where the main screen still anchors the setup. The discussion quickly moved past resolution and peak brightness into viewing distance, seating angles, and how much natural light hits the panel during the afternoon. One installer noted that a 65-inch panel in a bright room needs a different calibration than the same model in a basement theater, and that simple fact changed how we planned the rest of the session.
From there we shifted to the kitchen, where transparent OLED surfaces are starting to appear in renovation briefs. The designers were less interested in the novelty and more concerned about durability, heat from cooking, and whether a countertop display can survive daily cleaning. We spent a good twenty minutes on mounting depth alone, because the panel has to sit flush with the counter while still leaving room for ventilation.
By the end of the session we had a short list of practical takeaways that apply to most residential installations:
- Measure the room's light profile before choosing a panel, not just the wall dimensions.
- Plan cable routing and ventilation before the drywall goes up, not after.
- For kitchen surfaces, confirm the panel's heat tolerance and cleaning requirements with the manufacturer.
- Set expectations on viewing angles early, especially for rooms where people sit off-center.
- Leave room for firmware updates and future calibration, since OLED performance shifts over time.
The next step is to test these assumptions in an actual home, which means picking a single room and documenting the installation from start to finish.
